Binge eating is a big problem for human health, In the US alone, it is believed that 20 million women and 10 million makes are battling eating disorders, with binge eating disorders being one of the most common, As well as leading to obesity, and the complications that can develop from that, binge easting can obliterate mental health too.

If you have a problem with binge eating it is, then, very important that you do whatever you can to take back control. Of course, you should consult with a doctor, nutritionist, and maybe even a therapist on your journey back to health, but in the meantime, it may be worth looking at the most common causes of binge eating so that you can hopefully do something about them…

  1. Cravings

One of the most common causes of binge eating is cravings. However, cravings can be overcome if you know what is causing them. The most common causes of craving are dehydration, and lack of nutrients, 

So, if you want to stop cravings in their tracks, try drinking a glass of water. If that doesn’t help eat something that’s healthy and packed with nutrients like fruit and nuts. Hopefully, this will be enough to prevent you from reaching for the chips or whatever your trigger food is.

  1. Emotional eating

A very common cause of binge eating in adults is the need to comfort oneself when times are tough and you are unable to regulate your emotions in other ways. Many of us associate specific foods like candy, chips, or mash potatoes with happy times spent with loved ones, so when we’re feeling emotional and we don’t know what to do about it, we reach for ou5r comfort foods and dig in. 

What can you do to overcome comfort eating? Seeing a therapist to talk through your feelings may help, as will learning how to meditate so that you can understand your cravings and overcome them. If that’s not possible, try to find a food you love, but which is healthy and low calorie, and replace your usual comfort foods with that.

  1. Boredom

Boredom shouldn’t be as common as it is in a world where we have access to so much information at our fingertips, but it is still somehow an epidemic, and it is one of the primary causes of binge eating, So many of us pick up a pack of chips or raid the fridge for ice cream when we have nothing better to do, and once we start, we can’t seem to stop.

How do you stop boredom bingeing? Well, being busy is a good place to start, next time you feel bored, get up and go for a walk, read a great book or pick up a new hobby like knitting or photography. QWhehn the urge hits, do your new hobby and leave the chips alone.

Bonge eating is not easy to overcome, and professional help may be required, but the above solutions could help you to, at the very least, binge a bit less.
