What are you planning to do in 2018? Are you planning something huge? Something you’ve never done before, something that scares you more than anything you have ever done before?
I am.
I’m locked in to run the New York Marathon on Sunday November 4 and to me that’s huge.
Why?
Quite simply, apart from some cross-country running at high-school, and the obligatory laps of the oval at footy training, I would class myself as a non-runner. More of a walker really. That’s what I am.
My wife challenged ourselves to get this done and to tick it off the list and that’s what we have started the process of preparing for. Training has started. Currently at the time of writing we are 46 weeks out from the start of the marathon. We have plenty of time to get ready as long as we have effective use of time.
Week 1 of Training.
I have set a series of goals to achieve prior to the end of January. At the end of January, I want to be able to run 5 kilometres non-stop. So starting from scratch, these series of goals are designed to help my body adjust to the running and the commencement of conditioning and fitness journey.
The last thing i want to do is stand on the starting line of the new york marathon and wonder how the hell i’m going to do this.
APPS
I have a number of apps on my phone that will keep clarity on the goal. Firstly, I have an image of the finishing line as my lock phone image. I am also using Strava to plot my journey and Way of Life to support my good habits designed to hit the spot.
FUNNY STUFF
After doing a 5km “brisk” walk with Sharon Curl, I decided to finish with a 2km run. Note to self, choose your music wisely. The first stong blaring out as I started to run was “Grinding Halt” by the Cure.
LEARNINGS
Take things slow. It doesn’t matter how well you feel, stay to the grind. Stay slow and look after your feet.
I look forward to keeping you updated during my journey. Donāt wish me luck, it will happen. Tweet This!
The mindset that pushes you to finish 2km non-stop in the first week of training, builds the foundation for the mindset that completes 42 km 11months later Tweet This!
