Have you ever looked around and felt like everyone else was getting ahead?
Someone gets the promotion.
A friend buys a house.
Another launches a successful business.
Social media is full of milestones, celebrations, and highlight reels.
And quietly, almost without noticing, you begin telling yourself:
“I’m behind.”
Behind in your career.
Behind financially.
Behind in your relationships.
Behind in life.
It’s a feeling that affects more people than you might think.
But here’s something I want you to consider:
What if you’re not behind at all?
What if you’re simply becoming?

The Problem With Comparing Timelines
One of the biggest traps we fall into is believing that life has a universal schedule.
Graduate by this age.
Build your career by that age.
Get married.
Buy the house.
Have the children.
Retire comfortably.
When life doesn’t unfold according to that invisible timeline, it’s easy to assume we’ve failed.
But whose timeline are you following?
Your own?
Or one you’ve absorbed from everyone around you?
Life was never designed to be lived in comparison.
It’s designed to be lived with intention.
Social Media Has Changed the Way We Measure Ourselves
We now compare our ordinary Tuesday to someone else’s biggest achievement.
We see promotions without the setbacks.
Holiday photos without the financial stress.
Business success without the years of uncertainty.
Fitness transformations without the months of consistency.
It’s not that people are being dishonest.
It’s that we’re comparing our behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlights.
And that’s a comparison nobody wins.
Growth Rarely Looks Like Progress
Some of the most important seasons of life don’t look productive from the outside.
Recovering from burnout.
Learning to trust yourself again.
Building emotional resilience.
Becoming a better parent.
Starting over after redundancy.
Supporting someone you love through illness.
These seasons often feel slow.
Sometimes they feel like you’re standing still.
But underneath the surface, you’re developing qualities that will shape every chapter that follows.
Growth isn’t always visible.
Neither are tree roots.
Yet they’re essential.
Success Isn’t a Race
I’ve spent years coaching leaders, business owners, and professionals.
One thing I’ve learned is this:
The people who look “ahead” often feel exactly the same as those who believe they’re behind.
Because there will always be someone further along.
More experienced.
More successful.
More accomplished.
If comparison defines success, the finish line keeps moving.
Real success is different.
It’s becoming more of the person you’re capable of being.
Not becoming someone else.
Five Signs You’re Growing (Even If It Doesn’t Feel Like It)
Sometimes growth is so gradual that we miss it.
You may be becoming if:
- You’re setting healthier boundaries.
- You’re making decisions that align with your values.
- You’re recovering from setbacks more quickly.
- You’re asking better questions than you used to.
- You’re becoming more comfortable being yourself.
None of these show up on a résumé.
But they change everything.
Stop Asking “Am I Behind?”
Instead, ask:
- What have I learned this year?
- Who am I becoming?
- What strengths have difficult seasons developed in me?
- What would my younger self admire about the person I am today?
Those questions create perspective.
And perspective changes everything.
Your Timeline Is Yours
There is no prize for reaching milestones first.
Life isn’t a competition.
It’s a journey of growth.
Some people build businesses in their twenties.
Others discover their purpose in their fifties.
Some become parents early.
Others travel the world before settling down.
Some careers take decades to flourish.
Every path is different.
Every story unfolds at its own pace.
Becoming Takes Time
Think about the people you admire most.
Chances are, what you admire isn’t how quickly they succeeded.
It’s who they became along the way.
Resilient.
Kind.
Wise.
Patient.
Courageous.
Those qualities can’t be rushed.
They’re forged over time.
Through setbacks.
Through uncertainty.
Through seasons that felt like they were going nowhere.
Final Thought from Coach Curl
If you’ve been carrying the weight of feeling behind in life, I’d like to leave you with this.
You are not a deadline.
You are not a comparison.
You are not your age, your salary, your job title, or your social media feed.
You are a person who is still learning.
Still growing.
Still becoming.
And perhaps that’s exactly where you’re meant to be.
So take a breath.
Keep taking the next step.
Trust the process.
Because you’re not behind.
You’re becoming.
