There is no denying that we do not go to the dentist as much as we should! A lot of people bypass a trip to their local dentist because they see it as an unnecessary expense or because they simply do not have the time in today’s fast-paced way of life. However, if you notice any of the signs mentioned below, you definitely need to book an appointment to see a dentist sooner rather than later.

  1. Bleeding after brushing or flossing

The first sign that you need to see a dentist is if your teeth bleed while you brush them. The reason for this is that you could be developing periodontal disease, which is gum disease. This means that the tissue that holds your teeth in place is infected. If this is not treated, the bone around your teeth can disappear, and this can result in tooth loss. Other indications that you have gum disease include discharge in between your gums and teeth, tender or swollen gums, and red gums.

  1. Receding gums

As we get older, it is common for our gums to recede naturally. However, this can also be a sign of gum disease, so it is something that you need to be mindful of. Irrespective of your reason for suffering from receding gums, it can cause a number of different symptoms. This includes tooth loss, pain, infection, increasing decay risk, and the exposure of the delicate roots of your teeth. Treatment can help to reverse the process of this if you do go and see a dentist at the earliest opportunity.

  1. Dry mouth

If you have a dry mouth, it is a good idea to go and see your dentist so that he or she can determine the cause of this and advise you on ways to protect your teeth by restoring moisture. This is imperative because a healthy mouth is lubricated by saliva, which will neutralize the acid plaque produces and also wash away food particles.

  1. Loose or shifting teeth

Aside from the signs mentioned so far, you need to take widening gaps or slight movement seriously. After all, your teeth are meant to last a lifetime. This sort of symptom could be a sign of bone loss or an infection. You should also look out for differences in the way that your teeth fit together whenever you bite.

  1. Bumps and sores

Common canker sores are going to disappear on their own within a matter of a week or two. However, there are other types of oral lesions that require treatment. Candidiasis, or thrush, is an oral infection whereby the individual suffers white sores on the roof of their mouth, tonsils, inner cheek, or tongue. If you have diabetes, you are going to be more prone to this condition, as it thrives on the saliva having high levels of sugar.

  1. Toothache

Last but not least, if you have a persisting toothache, then you definitely need to see a dentist – this one is obvious!
