3 Effective Tips For Staying Safe In The Sun

According to data, about 33,000 sunburns are reported each year. Some are so severe that they require medical attention. Indeed, the sun contributes to the production of Vitamin D, which helps in the absorption of calcium in the body. For several others, the purpose of getting some sun exposure is to get a fashionable tan. However, it would help if you took precautions when you intend to be out in the sun. Below is a list of some tips to help you stay safe in the sun at all times.

1. Limit exposure to the sun at peak hours

Research has proven that the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 am and 4 pm. Therefore, being outdoors and unprotected during these hours may be detrimental to your overall health. People love to be at the beach, park or have a picnic when the sun is out. Although these locations and activities are fine, it helps to limit your exposure to direct sunlight. So, whenever you can, plan your day and have a fair idea of what the weather will be like within 24 hours.

If possible, plan indoor lunch breaks when the sun is highest during the hours mentioned above. Additionally, you can opt to stay in shaded areas when you have no choice but to be outdoors on a sunny day. If you’re driving, pulling down your sun flap can block the glares from the sun.

2. Wear protective clothing and accessories to block the rays

Ultraviolet rays are the main reason experts advise against staying out too long and unprotected in the sun. Although in scientific circles, ultraviolet rays have many beneficial uses, you should avoid them when it comes to health. This is why you need to invest in protective clothing and accessories to provide some relief from the sun when you have to be out there. For instance, wearing pants and long-sleeved shirts or blouses can provide some protection for your limbs.

For some people, it may be unthinkable to cover up the arms and legs when the sun is high up in the sky, and the heat is unbearable. Fortunately, breathable fabrics allow you to feel cool even with your arms and legs covered. You may also want to consider wearing wide-brimmed hats to protect your face and ears from sunburns. Additionally, keep an eye out for sunscreen products that indicate UVA and UVB ray protection. Furthermore, not all sunscreen products are water-resistant. However, it will be ideal to choose one that is. This way, if you sweat or go swimming, your skin still receives protection from the sun. However, it is advisable to reapply sunscreen every two to three hours or immediately after swimming for ultimate protection.
